Welcome to Ascension Health

home of wellbeing in the workplace. Take your team – and your business - to the next level.

Why Mental Wellbeing?

The UK is in the grip of a growing mental health crisis. At least 25% of UK adults struggle with their mental health in any one year.

The further impact on individuals is clear:
1 in every 6 working-age adults suffer from symptoms of mental illness
24% of women and 13% of men are actually diagnosed with depression in their lifetime. The true number could well be higher.
Over one-fifth of people have experienced suicidal thoughts
Covid-19, lockdowns, uncertainty and isolation have exacerbated the mental health crisis, though the true toll has yet to be realised. Despite that, there is still a stigma – even an ignorance – around mental health, and especially at work.
72,000,000 working days are lost due to mental ill-health
The cost to businesses is £34.9 billion every year
Every year, in England alone, the total cost of mental illness is thought to be £105 billion
Employers have a legal obligation to manage stress in the workplace
Every £1 an employer invests in mental health can expect a £5 return

Why Does Wellbeing Matter?

Mental health matters. That’s a sure and certain fact, and there is now, at least, more awareness of mental health issues. As employers, we have a duty of care and a responsibility to our people. We have a legal obligation to safeguard their health and safety and to provide a safe working environment.

A healthy workforce is beyond value and poor mental health at work costs billions every year. Every year 300,000 people with a mental health condition leave or even lose their jobs. You CAN help your staff stay well and help mitigate potential costs – both financial and human.

Taking care of your employees’ wellbeing isn’t merely the law; it’s the right thing to do

How is Wellbeing in the Workplace Promoted?

A culture of wellbeing in the workplace isn’t a perk; it’s a must-have. Around 45% of UK companies have taken steps to provide an employee wellbeing programme. However, about 75% of UK employees admit to feeling stressed.

Ascension Health aims to improve mental health in the workplace through training, consultancy and coaching. We deliver mental health and emotional wellbeing workshops and training. These address stress and anxiety, resilience, mindfulness optimism and positive relationships.

Completing mental health first aid training (Mental Health First Aid England certified) means your staff and your managers can call themselves Mental Health First Aiders. They’ll be equipped to spot the signs of mental illness, to help avoid it and to support those affected.

Why Do You Need to Promote Wellbeing in the Workplace?

The benefits to your business – to any business – are many and varied. They’re also invaluable.
Your people are your best investment:
Employees are more engaged
Staff retention is improved
Talent recruitment is enhanced
Absenteeism is reduced
Performance and productivity are enhanced
Creativity and efficiency are increased
Team morale and loyalty are strengthened

We all feel down sometimes. Stress is part of everyday life. Good mental health isn’t about being permanently happy and doesn’t mean never feeling anxious or sad.

Mental Wellbeing is the promotion of resilience in the face of problems; of coping in adversity; of feeling better about oneself and being able to function as an individual or in a team. Improved mental health can come from feeling valued, cared about, and listened to. We can ALL support mental health at work.

Healthy people are more likely to be happy people, and valued people tend to be happy people. Happy people are good for your business. In EVERY way.
